Dive-To-Survive Founder Wins Hall of Fame Scholarship (Flemington, NJ February 11, 2003)
In 2002, Glahn rallied a group of loyal friends to help organize the “BCD Dive to Survive” fundraiser that involved the diving community, numerous sponsors and local volunteers in an underwater treasure hunt and silent auction in Guppy Gulch Quarry (near Delta, PA). The one-day event raised more than $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Capt. Kathy Weydig, WDHOF President comments, “What is even more remarkable about this project is that Charlene’s mother died of cancer shortly before Dive To Survive took place, yet Charlene forged ahead with a positive attitude and tremendous courage, ensuring that this first time-event would be a success”. Glahn will use the WDHOF Scholarship money to help pay for a Scuba Instructor Course: her goal is to teach other breast cancer survivors to “dive in and enjoy life”. The Women Divers Hall of Fame™ is a unique honor society that is dedicated to the women who shape the world of diving. One of the primary goals of this international organization is to use the Women Divers Hall of Fame platform to promote careers and opportunities in the marine sciences and diving-related industries through its scholarship program, mentorship support and network of industry contacts. Charlene Glahn is one of five recipients for the WDHOF 2003 scholarship program. WDHOF has also chosen eight outstanding career professionals to be inducted into the Women Divers Hall of Fame. All of these women will be honored at the 27th annual Beneath the Sea Dive & Travel Expo 2003 to be held at the Meadowlands Convention Center in Secaucus, New Jersey during the weekend of March 28-30, 2003. WDHOF is a (501)(c)(3) non-profit organization founded by Beneath the Sea, Women Underwater E-Zine, Women’s Scuba Association, The Underwater Society of America, and Hillary Viders, Ph.D. For information about careers in SCUBA diving and application forms and requirements for 2004 scholarships, visit http://www.wdhof.org.
